# Notifications

MySpec notifies you when something needs your attention: a teammate mentions
you, a session finishes, or your organization nears a plan limit.

## The notification bell

The bell sits in the top bar, next to your avatar. A badge shows how many
notifications you have not read yet.

Select the bell to see your latest notifications:

- Select a notification to open what it is about, for example the comment
thread or the finished session. Opening it marks it as read.
- **Mark all as read** clears the badge.
- **See all notifications** opens the **Notifications** page.

## The Notifications page

The **Notifications** page lists everything you have been notified about,
newest first. Unread notifications are highlighted.

- Select **Load more** at the bottom to see older notifications.
- **Mark all as read** at the top marks every notification as read.

Reading a notification here also updates the badge on the bell.

## Notification types

| Type | When you get it | Who gets it |
|---|---|---|
| **Mention** | Somebody mentions you in a comment on a spec file. | The person mentioned. |
| **Reply** | Somebody replies to a comment thread you are part of. | Everyone who has posted in the thread, except the person replying. |
| **Session finished** | A spec session finishes. | The person who started it, and others who worked on its spec files. |
| **Quota warning** | Your organization is approaching a usage limit. | Owners and admins. |
| **Quota exceeded** | Your organization has reached a usage limit. | Owners and admins. |
| **Payment** | A payment for your organization was processed. | Owners and admins. |
| **Announcement** | MySpec has news to share. Some open a post on the MySpec blog in a new tab. | Everyone. |

You are never notified about your own comments. Comments written by AI
agents don't send notifications.

For what to do about quota notifications, see
[Usage and limits](/guides/usage-and-limits/).

## Choose email notifications

In-app notifications are always on. You can choose which ones also reach you
by email.

1. **Open your profile**

Open the avatar menu and choose **Profile**.
2. **Find Email notifications**

Scroll to the **Email notifications** card.
3. **Turn types on or off**

Use the switch next to each type. Each change saves at once.

| Type | Email by default |
|---|---|
| **Mention** | Off |
| **Reply** | Off |
| **Session finished** | On |
| **Quota warning** | On |
| **Quota exceeded** | On |

Two types have no switch:

- **Payment** receipts are always sent by email.
- **Announcements** appear in the app only.

## Notification sound

MySpec can play a sound when the AI finishes responding in a chat. Turn it on
or off with **Notification Sound** under **Preferences** on your **Profile**.
It is on by default, and the setting applies to the browser you set it in.
